Coming soon : Mysteries beneath the waves

January 19 to May 5, 2019

Visitors are invited to browse the findings of researchers and uncover the oceanic properties of the St. Lawrence River:Dive into the world of marine biotechnology, learn more about fishing and aquaculture, and develop an understanding of the challenges it faces every day. Through Mysteries beneath the waves, the St. Lawrence and its relatively obscure environment are revealed, opening the doors to an unsuspected, unusual, even mythicuniverse.

Produced by Exploramer, in collaboration with Institut des Sciences de la mer (ISMER), Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Maurice-Lamontagne Institute, Merinov, and Centre de recherche sur les Biotechnologies marines, with the financial support of Heritage Canada.

The Fjord Aquarium

Permanent discovery space

Dive into this live laboratory and let yourself be immersed into the marine depths of the Saguenay Fjord. In our 53,000-litre saltwater aquarium you will discover an incredible marine fauna. Handle starfish, sea cucumbers, see urchins, and the other species that dwell in our touch pool. Interact with our fish on our immense interactive screen and ask questions to our virtual fish. They will reveal their identity and otherwise well-kept secrets…

Watch the fish (aquarium), for invertebrates (touch pool) at feeding time. Check with the reception for schedule.


Permanent discovery space

Fascinating: our Vivarium displays exotic and flamboyant insects, as well other species from the province of Quebec. Observe hundreds of naturalized species and dozens of live specimens. Some can even be touched. Butterflies and dragonflies with vivid colours, hairy spiders, stick insects, grasshoppers… Get to know them and learn to love them! Also, discover surprising small animals! Hermit crabs, crabs, frogs, scorpions, and salamanders will ensnare you!

Permanent and entirely revamped exhibition

From colonization to population genetics, our new permanent exhibition depicts the many facets of the Saguenay‒Lac-Saint-Jean region. With the valuable scientific insight provided by the 40-year existence of the BALSAC database, the region is revealed in a new light, away from myths and prejudice. Discover an exceptional people’s history, through their murmurs and exuberance.

Our multilingual show, Journey into the Heart of the Saguenay Fjord, was specially created for the Musée du Fjord. This immersive experience into the majestic Saguenay Fjord allows each participant to choose between 5 languages, to better comprehend the scientific information discussed during the projection. The languages offered are German, English, Spanish, French, and Italian.
